Eye Examinations
VISION EXAMINATION AND GLASSES OR CONTACT LENS PRESCRIPTION
This examination is intended for everyone who:
- has poor distance or near vision,
- needs new glasses or updated prescription,
- is considering wearing contact lenses.
Includes precise vision and diopter measurement, corneal shape assessment, and basic eye health examination. Based on the findings, we recommend the most appropriate vision correction and prescribe glasses or contact lenses if needed. For contact lens examination, we teach proper use and care, and you receive your first pair.
EXTENDED SPECIALIST OPHTHALMOLOGICAL EXAMINATION
This examination is intended for everyone with vision problems not explained by refractive errors alone, for example:
- vision deterioration, blurred vision or distorted image,
- visual disturbances and/or flashing,
- gritty, burning, stinging, dry or inflamed eye sensation,
- suspected cataract or post-cataract surgery monitoring (e.g., posterior capsule opacification of artificial lens – IOL, requiring YAG laser capsulotomy),
- diabetic patients who want preventive ophthalmological examination,
- thorough eye health assessment.
The examination includes, in addition to vision and diopter measurements, detailed examination of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye and retinal imaging with optical coherence tomography (OCT) using the Spectralis Heidelberg device. OCT is a non-invasive imaging diagnostic method based on laser technology that enables early detection of microstructural changes in the fundus.
For diabetic patients without signs of complications, this is an appropriate preventive examination that allows early detection of initial changes and prevention of diabetic eye complications.
SPECIALIST OPHTHALMOLOGICAL EXAMINATION FOR RETINAL DISEASES
This examination is intended for:
- patients with retinal diseases or suspected conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, high myopia changes, diabetic retinopathy or other retinal diseases,
- diabetic patients with existing signs of diabetic retinopathy,
- everyone requiring precise monitoring or treatment of retinal changes within the retinal clinic, including:
- treatment with biological drug injections into the eye (anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injections - anti-VEGF injections such as Eylea, Vabysmo, Lucentis),
- corticosteroid drug injections into the eye (Ozurdex implant),
- laser treatment of the retina,
Includes extended specialist examination and non-invasive multimodal retinal imaging with Spectralis device, which uses multiple methods simultaneously (OCT, OCT-angiography, fundus autofluorescence).
Bolnik prejme tudi:
- professional explanation of the condition,
- advice on preventive measures to maintain vision,
- recommendations for appropriate nutritional supplements for the eyes.
This examination is crucial for maintaining vision in age-related macular changes, retinal diseases and diabetic complications.
SPECIALIST OPHTHALMOLOGICAL EXAMINATION FOR GLAUCOMA
This examination is intended for:
- individuals with glaucoma diagnosis,
- those with suspected glaucoma,
- individuals with elevated eye pressure or family predisposition,
- glaucoma patients requiring laser glaucoma treatment – selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).
Includes extended specialist examination, precise eye pressure measurement, gonioscopy examination of the angle, and specialized OCT examinations of the optic nerve and macula using the Spectralis device.
OPHTHALMOLOGICAL EXAMINATION FOR DRIVER'S LICENSE EXTENSION OR ACQUISITION
This examination is intended for everyone who needs:
- acquisition or extension of driving license categories B, C or E,
- official ophthalmological report for occupational medicine doctor.
During the examination, we determine whether the candidate has adequate visual functions for safe driving as prescribed by applicable health standards. We perform precise vision assessment, including visual acuity measurement, color vision if needed, and visual field testing.
After the ophthalmological examination, we issue an official report that you submit to the occupational medicine doctor in the process of obtaining or extending your driver's license. The examination is suitable for both younger candidates and older drivers who require regular vision monitoring, especially in the presence of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, or diabetic complications.
During the examination, we may apply dilating drops if needed. The effect occurs in 15–30 minutes and can last up to 4 hours. Driving is not recommended during this time, so arrange alternative transport if possible. Reserve up to 60 minutes.
Diseases and Treatment
AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration is a chronic retinal disease that occurs more frequently after age 50. It affects the macula, responsible for sharp central vision (reading, face recognition, detail detection). The disease progresses slowly and is often initially asymptomatic, so early detection is only possible through preventive examinations.
We distinguish between dry and wet forms:
- Dry AMD progresses slowly due to macular cell degeneration.
- Wet AMD is rarer but more dangerous, as abnormal vessels cause macular damage and rapid vision deterioration.
Treatment:
- Dry AMD: regular monitoring, vision self-monitoring with Amsler grid, healthy lifestyle, nutritional supplements (AREDS 2), newer light therapy options - photobiomodulation (PBM).
- Wet AMD: intravitreal anti-VEGF injections and regular monitoring.
Early intervention often makes a crucial difference for vision.
HIGH MYOPIA
High myopia (-6 diopters or more) means greater risk of complications, as the eye is longer and the retina thinner. Risk increases for retinal tears and detachment, macular degeneration, pathological vessels, glaucoma and cataracts. Changes are often painless and unnoticed.
Treatment:
- regular check-ups,
- laser for dangerous retinal changes (tears),
- drug injections into the eye for pathological vessels or macular swelling.
DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
Diabetes can damage small vessels in the retina, leading to diabetic retinopathy. The disease is often initially asymptomatic but can cause severe vision loss. Therefore, regular preventive examinations are essential.
Treatment:
- good control of diabetes, blood pressure and lipids,
- for macular swelling: anti-VEGF injections into the eye or corticosteroid implants (Ozurdex),
- for pathological vessels: laser treatment,
- surgery in selected cases.

GLAUCOMA
Glaucoma is a chronic disease in which the optic nerve gradually deteriorates. It initially progresses without symptoms, and vision damage is irreversible. It is most commonly associated with elevated intraocular pressure.
Treatment:
- eye drops to lower intraocular pressure,
- selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT),
- surgical treatment if necessary.
The goal is to slow or stop disease progression.
CATARACT
Cataract is the gradual clouding of the eye lens, most commonly associated with aging. Vision becomes blurry, less contrasted, glare appears and night vision worsens.
Treatment:
- surgery: removal of cloudy lens and insertion of artificial intraocular lens,
- YAG laser capsulotomy later if needed for capsule clouding.
DRY EYE
Dry eye is a common chronic tear film disorder where tears do not protect the eye surface effectively enough. It causes burning sensation, redness, eye fatigue and occasionally blurred vision.
Treatment:
- artificial tears or gels,
- eyelid hygiene and warm compresses,
- anti-inflammatory drops if needed,
- adaptation of work and environmental habits.
About Me
Dr. Ana Pajtler Rošar, MD
Specialist in Ophthalmology - subspecialized in retinal diseases
I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana in 2005 and dedicated my professional path to ophthalmology and modern approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases. I completed my specialization in ophthalmology at the Eye Department of the General Hospital Celje and at the Eye Clinic in Ljubljana. In 2010, I successfully passed the European specialist exam in ophthalmology in Paris and obtained the title FEBO (Fellow of European Board of Ophthalmology), which represents the highest European standard of professional excellence.
In 2017 and 2018, I was part of the international academic and clinical environment at the University of Milan, at Luigi Sacco Hospital. Under the mentorship of Prof. Giovanni Staurenghi, I subspecialized in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, while actively participating in research projects. There I deepened my knowledge and experience in the field of the most advanced multimodal imaging methods, such as autofluorescence, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography (OCT-A), which today represent the foundation of accurate diagnosis of retinal diseases.
In 2022, I obtained my PhD at the Faculty of Medicine in Ljubljana under the mentorship of Prof. Nataša Vidović Valentinčič and Prof. Giovanni Staurenghi. Between 2007 and 2023, I was employed at the Eye Clinic in Ljubljana, where I performed cataract surgeries and was deeply involved in the treatment of patients with retinal diseases.
I actively participate in professional associations in Slovenia and Europe and am a member of the European Association for Retinal Diseases (EURETINA).
I am a member of the Medical Chamber of Slovenia, the Association of Ophthalmologists of Slovenia (ZOS), the Slovenian Medical Association (SDZ), and the Medical Chamber of Surgeons and Dentists of the Province of Milan (OMCeO Milano) in Italy.
My professional interest is primarily focused on imaging diagnostics and treatment of retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye complications, high myopia, retinal vascular diseases and intraocular inflammation, and the use of laser treatment and biological drug injections into the eye (with vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors - anti-VEGF).
In my work, I follow the goal of providing patients with the highest level of professional care, supported by the most advanced diagnostic approaches and individualized treatment plans.
